I’m afraid that we’re not going to successfully bully the billionaires with peaceful protesting and letters. They’re actively choosing to be morally corrupt. I don’t think they care about optics.
Honestly, if you look back at how we all got the rights that are being dismantled, it was the Civil Rights Era. They protested, but that wasn’t what made them effective. They organized boycotts, they didn’t wait for their rights, they fought for them, and they did it well, without the internet.
Just standing outside of your least fav elected official’s office will not overturn things. At this point, protests feel like social gatherings. It’s so peaceful that there aren’t even that many officers outside monitoring. Protesting gives hope, but we can’t hope ourselves out of this.
The opposite of inaction (our elected officials are basically warm seats in a chair, hoarding taxpayer money) is action. We can vote, but what has happened in 9 months will take years to unravel. As an optimist, I’ve realized that we are too deep in our individuality and too fearful to brainstorm the actions that need to be taken.
America needs a superhero and in the past America’s superhero was Black and that superhero didn’t just fight for Black People but they fought for everyone.
While you’re putting your cape on this year for Halloween, ask what you can do to save democracy. And if you’re Black and you remember your family stories (or are fortunate to know your family history) ask your elders why today’s times feel like deja vu. Our elders fought for rights that were dismissed and dismantled, and now that America is treating everyone how they treat Black People, everyone is suddenly worried because, unlike Black People, they don’t know how to adapt.
So, it’s nine months into a terrible administration for human rights. The question is, what are you doing to be on the right side of history? When do people realize that there are more people who aren’t billionaires than there are billionaires? When do the people realize that the people in office don’t care about their protests and put their heads together to try something else?
